Mauritian athlete dies
The news came as a shock, Guylene Duval, well known Mauritian athlete dies during her morning excercise at the Reduit Stadium's gym. She was killed while trying to perform a bench press with a 110Kg barbell. Police report concluded she died of "asphyxiation due to neck compression".
Now this is quite a plausible accident except that : how on earth can a 36 year old woman, weighing 54kg bench press a 110kg barbell? Having been a regular gym athelete for quite some years now, bench presses are the basics that almost all athletes do and i've been of no exception to the rule. Normally this exercise should be done under assistance and if ever something goes wrong and you can't lift the weight, the bar would end up on your chest and you could quite easily unload the bar by allowing the weights to slide one side at a time and thus prevent injury. After several years of training, the most I can bench press, under assistance of course, is 80 kg. I train at a gym with much stronger athletes who are also professional body builders. These guys are well above 80kg and the most i've seen them lift on a bench press is 100kg. For comparison purposes, top female atheletes in Mauritius can lift around 60 to 70 kg on bench presses. Here i'm talking of strength demanding athletes like Judokas. So practically speaking she could never lift that much weight and knowing the professional athlete that she was, neither would she want to try lifting those weights. Now was Guylene Duval a superwoman or is this a perfect murder? The anwser is obvious isn't it? You've got to be kidding if you still believe Guylene Duval died from an accident. The police enquiry is going on but as it is, nothing has been found yet to trace the culprit... But in no way should this be classified as an accident.
